In the 1940s the British Government established "shadow" factories at secret locations. One of these was Castle Bromwich Aero Factory where Spitfire fighter planes and Lancaster bombers were produced. Birmingham's factories were targeted by Luftwaffe air raids during WW2. Some companies relocated to continue working. Lucas moved their production of Spitfire wing sub-assemblies from Great King Street in the Birmingham inner city to the Cadbury's factory site in Bournville.
