WW1 Toby Jugs - Marshal Foch and King George (Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery)

Toby jug of Marshal Foch & Toby jug of King George. Slip cast earthenware painted in over-glaze enamels, England, Burslem, Staffordshire, made by Arthur J Wilkinson Ltd, designed by Francis Carruthers Gould, 1918.

Marshal Foch is shown drinking a toast from a bottle of champagne marked "Au diable le kaiser" ("the devil take the Kaiser"), while the cockerel emblem of France and the British lion strut and stalk around the plinth on which he sits.

King George V is one of the character jugs from a set of eleven celebrating allied leaders of the First World War produced as patriotic souvenirs between 1915 and 1919.
