Russo-Japanese War - paper cutout soldier from Boston Globe ( March 27, 1904.)
The Russo-Japanese War arose from the rivalry between Russia and Japan for supremacy in Korea and Manchuria. The war began on February 8, 1904, when the main Japanese fleet unexpectedly attacked and besieged the Russian naval squadron in Port Arthur.
