German wooden toy soldiers (c. 1840) from Basel Historical Museum
The poor but wood-rich region of the Saxon Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) had concentrated on the production of wooden toys since the early 19th century. During the long, harsh winters, large quantities of small-format play figures were made in home-based work with the help of the entire family: farms, arks with countless animals, market stalls and sounding movement games. The figures were packed in chipboard boxes, a sure sign that there was no need to save on wood in this region. These toys were brought to Nuremberg via publishers in Sonneberg, Thuringia, and from there to large parts of Europe via retailers. These Erzgebrige wooden toy soldiers (c. 1840) are presented at Basel Historical Museum.

Elastolin quick-marching figures of German soldiers
In 1939, Elastolin introduced the quick-marching figures 33/6 as 'Inf. im neuen Schritt' - 'Ãn the new step'.
They were also offered as Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, in black SS uniform. These composition soldiers are the first Elastolin figures to be made successfully with moulded composition rifles at the slope, and they were re-issued after the war, eventually becoming Bundesheer (Austrian Armed Forces) for a while.

The Elastolin composition toy soldiers, the best-known to collectors, are probably the military figures and a series of 'personality figures' from the Third Reich era (1933-1945) are very popular with contemporary collectors.

Elastolin HJ Jungvolk figures
In 30s, Elastolin produced various composition figures of the Deutsches Jungvolk members.
The Deutsches Jungvolk was the separate section for boys aged 10 to 14 of the Hitlerjugend organisation in Nazi Germany. Through a programme of outdoor activities, parades and sports, it aimed to indoctrinate its young members in the tenets of Nazi ideology. Membership became fully compulsory for eligible boys in 1939. By the end of World War II, some had become child soldiers. After the end of the war in 1945, both the Deutsches Jungvolk and its parent organization, the Hitlerjugend, ceased to exist.
